A press imprint or publishing imprint is the name of the publisher of your book. It appears on the back of your book, inside your book, and in the metadata associated with your book, which you will see listed on Amazon and other online booksellers under “publisher.”

Some people who self-publish choose to use their personal name for this purpose. If that’s what you choose to do, that’s fine. However, as common as self-publishing is these days, there’s still a certain credibility associated with having a publisher, so there’s really no need to advertise that you self-published by using your personal name.

We recommend that our clients create a publishing imprint. This can be as simple as filing a DBA certificate (which means you or your business is doing business as that name). If you have any questions about establishing a business or filing a DBA, check with your attorney or visit https://www.sba.gov/business-guide/launch-your-business/register-your-business.

What should you name your press imprint? That’s up to you. The name should have meaning to you and represent your intentions and purpose. It’s customary to include the word press, publishing, publications, or books at the end of the name. You may also want to register a domain name associated with your imprint with a website hosting company.

You don’t need to trademark your imprint name to use it, but if you want the added protection a trademark imparts, speak to a trademark attorney.

If you’d like a logo associated with your press imprint, you can hire the services of a graphic designer. We can also help you with that. Just ask.
