At its core, a legacy memoir or autobiography is written with the primary intention of being “bequeathed” to future generations. While a standard memoir might be written to reach the general public or for commercial success, a legacy project is driven by the desire to preserve a person’s essence, values, and history for their descendants. That’s not to say the general public won’t find it of value; there is often a universal wisdom in these accounts that speaks to any reader, regardless of their relation to the author. But its true purpose is to leave a personalized familial legacy.
For me, there is a unique magic in editing the stories of those in their seventies, eighties, and nineties, helping to shape those stories into a book they can hold and flip through. Knowing that this book might be read by their great-great-grandchild someday—or even by a stranger seeking perspective from a life well lived—gives profound meaning to my work.
