Title: Afire With the Spirit Within: Poems to Accompany the Spiritual Exercises
Author(s) Walter Bado, S.J.

St. Ignatius' title for his manual on spiritual retreats is quite plain: Spiritual Exercises. But the various elements (prayers, scriptural readings, guidelines, meditations, contemplations, etc.) which constitute the manual's contents involve dramatic interplay; at the heart of that dynamic is a mystery embedded in the very title of the now classic work: Spirit--the glorious mystery of the Holy Spirit sent by Jesus in concert with his Father and at work in the world (cf. John 14: 25; 16: 7-14; Acts, passim)

To be “afire with Spirit within” is today more than ever crucial. Prophetic voices keep on urgently sounding the catholic (= universal, all embracing) call for people of good will to act; specifically, with the Spirit's guidance and inspiration to fulfill Jesus' earthly mission and bring about God's kingdom of peace and justice incarnated in the beatitudes.

The 100 poems in this book span several years of composition by the author; they are here structured under the headings which involve the inner dynamic of the Exercises mentioned above. At the discretion of the retreatants and spiritual directors, the poems can be adapted for use in retreats in all their variety.

A closing suggestion: recite the poem that touches you; make it an audible prayer, as you pray it softly or, under the proper circumstances, aloud. Let the world hear you calling. To life!
