Title: From Blind Side to Strong Side: Preventing the Cycle of Domestic Abuse
Author(s) Julie Bernardo

Eight Personal Accounts of Domestic Abuse & Their Turning Points — with Tips and Resources

When we fall in love with someone, emotions can hit us hard—whether or not we’re ready for it. And when that happens, we may do anything in our power to secure that relationship with the person who makes us feel good in the moment.

But as we start to get to know our partner a little better, we also get to know their ugly side a little better, too. One day we may find ourselves justifying every putdown that leaves our partner’s lips. Or we may downplay a verbal argument that turns physical. We may even lie to friends and family about every mark, scratch, bump, or bruise they see on our bodies. Domestic abuse can take many forms, and it isn’t always easy for others to spot.

From Blind Side to Strong Side features firsthand accounts of domestic abuse survivors, offering insight into the warning signs of an abusive relationship. Each of the eight stories told from their respective points of view highlight the subtle and overt red flags to arm any woman who may find herself in such a relationship with awareness and knowledge. This book identifies descriptions of the various types of abuse and concludes with a state-by-state listing of advocacy groups and points of contact.

Throughout our lives, we all experience ups and downs in our relationships. However, the downs of an abusive relationship cause us trauma, affect our self-esteem, and leave scars both seen and unseen that last well beyond the end of the relationship. Some of us may even still feel the pain when reflecting on our past involvement in an abusive relationship. But, ultimately, it’s what we do with the hurt that helps us take back our voice.
